|
Do you fancy an Archaeological Adventure this summer? Would you like to unearth a piece of history, decide the fate of a Gladiator or try your hand at scuba diving? Well, there is one place you can do all of these and more, and that is English Heritage Fort Cumberland on 31st July and 1st August for their Festival of British Archaeology!
There will be a wonderful mobile maritime museum for children to learn all about the history waiting to be discovered on the seabed. They can also try out scuba diving if they bring along a swimming costume. As always, Fort Cumberland is welcoming the most marvellous array of re-enactors and craftspeople to demonstrate such diverse arts as bronze casting, shoe making, knot tying and shingle making. There will also be tours of the historic Napoleonic fort, together with tours of the moat, rich with beautiful and unusual wildlife. In addition to all of this, Fort Cumberland is once again hosting two days of entertaining and informative talks on subjects as diverse as the Palaeolithic archaeology of Boxgrove and Portsdown, the end of Roman Britain, and the gardens of Gilbert White. Entry is free and all activities are free. There is disabled access, free parking and catering on site, or you can bring a picnic. It promises to be a fun-packed, fact-packed weekend for the whole family, so come and unravel the mystery of history at Fort Cumberland this summer! For further details: call: 023 9285 6704 |

The themes of the 2010 Fort Cumberland weekend event are Prehistory and Romans, so whether you wish to watch the gory glory of the Gladiators or try your hand at the ancient art of cave painting, there is much to do and see. Kids - you have the opportunity to become an archaeologist for the day and follow the Archaeological Trail, digging in your own excavation and learning all about the objects and bones you find. There is also the chance to see the state-of-the-art laboratories, X-Ray your objects and meet the brilliant scientists and their machines that go ping!
